This volume examines the ways in which ancient historians described periods of difficulty. For such periods the modern era has adopted the term 'crisis' as a catch-all. People in antiquity, by contrast, did not use this term in the familiar modern sense. This volume demonstrates the manifold approaches adopted by the ancients when trying to grasp what we can so easily subsume under one concept.
