The Epistle to the Romans and the Gospel of John for generations have been favorite and theologically foundational biblical writings among the devout. Unfortunately, Romans, like John, is quoted a lot more than well understood. Misinterpretation is the mother of misapplication in the business of living out our faith. One other problem in both cases is that some scholarly commentaries are too technical and non-pastoral to enlighten and edify, whereas others are frankly too devotional, too sketchy, and too superficial to really explain the text.
