James Legge (1815-1897) was a Scottish sinologist, missionary, and one of the foremost Western scholars of Chinese classical texts in the nineteenth century. His translations, including the Confucian classics and Taoist writings, formed a cornerstone of early Western engagement with Chinese philosophy. Legge's work is noted for its rigorous scholarship, extensive commentary, and lasting influence on the study and interpretation of Eastern thought in the English-speaking world.
